ZOE CHICCO ON PEALS

What type of pearls do you like working with?
“I choose the pearls I work with based solely on color and shape. I am not typically a pearl person, but I am always looking for different materials to work with. When I saw these freshwater pearls that were gray, with large holes and an imperfect round shape, I knew I would be able to create something outside the box with them. To me they screamed black leather.”

How do you update the category of pearls ?
“Pearls are typically thought of as classic so I really enjoy using them in ways that are more edgy. By using leather and oxidized silver it toughens them up a bit and makes them feel current and fresh.”

JANE A. GORDON ON PEALS

What type of pearls do you like working with?
“Pearls are beautiful against the skin, and any shape can work. I look at what’s in front of me and allow it to flow together in unexpected ways. For example, I removed wood beads from a dress and mixed them with pearls.”

How do you update the category of pearls?
“For three years I have been giving seminars to demystify pearls so people understand the words they hear so often: style, size, shape, surface and luster. I also design with the thought that pearls are the perfect metaphor for life: Forget the rules.”
