YOUR TIP FOR MAY 7, 2012

When making calls to inform your customers of a special sale or function, try to reach them when they’re NOT at home.

WHY? Leaving a message helps you avoid appearing like a hard-pitching telemarketer.

HOW? If you’re calling a home number, mid-afternoon is usually the best time to miss someone. Monday tends to be the best day of the week, because it’s when people are busiest. Leave a friendly, 10-second-or-less message inviting them to your event. "People appreciate that,” says retail expert and author Rick Segel. (And remember to be sure you follow the "Do Not Call" rules and have permission to make the call.)
