Master crystal maker unveils new men’s model.

When you think of crystals — of the manmade variety, that is — there is only one name that comes to mind: Swarovski. In 2009, when other luxury makers were pulling back, Swarovski went full throttle into watches, mixing Swiss technology with precision-cut crystals. The digital D. Light became an iconic look, winning the brand a Red Dot design award. Swarovski used its expertise in cutting crystal to create new cases, bezels and bracelets, and in a first, faceted high-tech ceramic to a glittering effect.

But if you think all this scintillating style is reserved for women, think again. In 2010, Swarovski launched a men’s jewelry collection combining stainless steel with crystal accents. This month, at BaselWorld 2012, Swarovski is expanding its men’s line with the introduction of its first watches for men. The initial style, the handsome Piazza Grande, is based on its bestselling Piazza watch. The use of crystal is subtle. Hand-applied jet hematite crystals on the markers blend with the jet-black dial. And Swarovski’s expertise in precision cutting can be seen in the 24 facets of the black ceramic crown and the black ceramic accents on the case.
