YOUR TIP FOR JULY 28, 2010
Clean up your credit rating, starting today.
WHY? You'll potentially save thousands of dollars over the terms of your loans.
HOW? Find out your credit score at a financial services website like Creditkarma.com or by signing up for a free trial of TrueCredit by TransUnion, one of the big three credit bureaus, or paying $12.95 at myfico.com. If your score is less than great, do the following (this is in addition to paying your bills on time, of course):

1. Review your personal credit reports for errors - they happen surprisingly frequently.
2. Limit the number of credit applications you make, especially for new credit cards.
3. Ask for a break. Call up a creditor and politely inquire if they'll take any egregious late payments off your credit report. Sometimes they will.
4. Check myfico.com for more ideas on how to improve your credit rating and use their calculator to see how much you'd save.
